When smaller segments lift engagement more than louder copy
Widening the audience can dilute relevance faster than any title rewrite can recover. A short guide to balancing reach and fit.
Product teams under pressure to “hit more users” often expand a successful segment until the open and action rates collapse. The original message still works for the people it was written for; it simply reaches people for whom the offer is irrelevant.
Engagement tracking should show segment size beside action rate. If doubling the audience halves completion, the programme did not grow — it diluted. Keep a control segment close to the original definition when you expand, so you can see whether the drop is from new recipients or from fatigue among the core group.
In practice, we ask clients to name the job of each push: remind, recover, inform, or promote. Remind and recover messages usually need tighter segments. Promote messages can be wider if frequency caps are strict and preference centres are clear.
Before rewriting copy for the third time, check whether the audience definition drifted. Many engagement recoveries come from restoring the segment, not from inventing a louder banner.
